(28) Week of March 26th

3/26/2018

 

1) QUIZ #3, open notes, Wed./Thurs.
2) UN-Lock-in forms DUE Friday
3) Friday = last day before break!

MONDAY/TUESDAY:
  • Warm up: 10 min.
    • 1) Take out your value scale worksheet, paying close attention to the linear/pen and ink value scales. 2)  Look at the still life object at your table, paying close attention to the effects of the direct light source.  3) Draw the object lightly with pencil, then add a range of linear/pen and ink values to differentiate between the highlights, mid-tones, shadow edges, and cast shadows that you observe. YOUR GOAL: A drawing that shows the accurate illusion of form through value vs. outline ​
  • Class activities:​
    • Discuss Masaccio
    • Work on cartoons:
      • Studio day 3 of 4
      • GOAL: Inking 1/2 done (pencil lines will be erased after fully inking) 
      • Before inking, make sure to have a plan re: light source & placement/type of values

    • Gather notes for quiz

    • Work on cartoons:
      • Studio day 4 of 4 (no more class time after today)(EVEN day classes also have Friday)
      • GOAL: Inking done (pencil lines will be erased after fully inking)(if you are not done, see HOMEWORK)
        • DON'T FORGET LINE WEIGHT
        • APPLY VALUES THOUGHTFULLY
    • If you have extra time:
      • Work on SB #5 (due Friday)
      • SPRING CLEANING - fill portfolios

  • Continue studio work from yesterday - finish cartoons
  • If you have extra time, use it to put finishing touches on SB #5 (due today)

HOMEWORK is designed to: 1) allow for exploration, practice, preparation, and application of class content, 2) encourage independent work, time management, and efficiency of work flow (don't procrastinate!), 3) fit within the weekly homework time allotted for this class. Keep these things in mind as you work. Use of a timer is one way to stay on task and to monitor your work time. Please note that your individual needs and work process may result in spending more or less than the suggested average time. Ask for help/use extended lunch as needed; communicate extension requests at least 3-days before a deadline.​​​
  • DUE FRIDAY: IMPORTANT!!!! The school calendar has been changed and Friday is an EVEN day. 3rd period, you can still turn your sketchbook and cartoon in on Friday but you have to remember to do so in order to avoid losing late points.

MONDAY: Future Dragons will visit,10:15 - 10:45 am
TUESDAY: Future Dragons will visit, 9:30 - 10:00 am, 12:30 - 1:00 pm/1:00 - 1:30 pm​
  • Warm up: 10 min.

    • Daily drawing: Using either one or two point linear perspective, draw an open box - with something inside.
    • Turn in practice packets if you worked on them over the weekend
  • Class activities:​
    • Review figure drawing & linear perspective - things to keep in mind to avoid the mistakes that are most often made
    • Work on cartoons - make as much progress as possible so that Kirk has something on which to offer feedback (next class)
      • DO NOT FORGET: 1) All the drawing and composition skills learned to date; 2) Wally Wood's suggestions for successful panels; 3) To use the linear perspective packet and figure-tracings as references when drawing/to help you solve problems independently; 4) The library books on your tables; and 5) The many resources provided to you on the Projects page(s), like.... How to Draw a Cartoon Body

OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOU:

#1: The National Art Honor Society is looking for a few new members! Ideally, you have been in Art Club and already know what the NAHS does... but, if not, and if you are planning to stay enrolled in art through graduation, you may still apply. Talk to Mrs. Mosley about how to proceed

#2: Be a camp counselor @ VCU's summer Creative Arts Day Camp: Go HERE for the application (applications due May 1)
MONDAY/TUESDAY:
  • Warm up: 10 min.
    • Linear perspective packet (due Friday, take home if necessary)
      • If you are done, work on your value scales (the top 3 only); check your technique, refine as needed; squint to make sure that each value is gradual but distinct 
        • If you are done that as well, then work on your cartoon drafts and/or SB #5
  • Class activities:​
    • Attach label to your YAMM exhibit selection
    • Review linear perspective... What will you do with this skill? How can you apply it to your cartoon - to your figure drawings - to anything else that you do?
    • Review figure drawing/finish figure tracings (also due Friday)... What will you do with this skill? Consider how these tracings can act as reference images for your cartoon.
    • Work on cartoon drafts and character development (draw them in multiple positions that you can tell your story in the most effective way. 
      • Don't forget the resources that have been provided to you on the Projects page, like How to Draw a Cartoon Body 
​WEDNESDAY/THURSDAY:
  • Warm up: 10 min. 
    • Get ready to work with Kirk; put the finishing touches on your multiple drafts and character sketches
  • Class activities:​
    • NOTE: Thursday's class is slightly longer to allow for course selection
    • Guest artist, Kirk O'Brien - finalize story, decided on strip or book page format, composition of each panel & grouping of panels, etc.; get as much drawn as you can (Kirk will be back next week to explain inking)

    • Discuss Artist Spotlight #11; review answers and make connections to figure drawing (cartooning), linear perspective, subject, composition, content, and everything else we have been doing...
