(17) Week of January 8th

Pay special attention to the agenda; things have gone back and forth quite a bit as the school schedule has changed again and again...

The FINAL DUE DATE for the Subject/Composition/Content project AND the self-assessment rubric AND the artist statement is now FRIDAY. Please note that there is NO guaranteed class time in which to work; use lunch/other times as needed.

AND....Semester exams have been cancelled! Even though midterm growth will not be assessed via an exam, it will still be assessed.  It will be expected that, when as asked to re-do a drawing prompt(s) that you completed as part of your Art Skills Inventory, you will:
  1. Use a BETTER composition this time (interesting, purposeful, well-balanced, etc.) because you have learned about the importance of composition and how to approach that visual problem.
  2. Draw with INCREASED accuracy (proportion, perspective, observational detail, etc.) because you have been deliberately practicing the observational drawing skills that will allow you to do so.
  3. Exhibit REFINED facility with the medium (sophisticated use of pencil & application of line quality) because you have been deliberately practicing  the ways you are in control of something as simple as a pencil. 
  4. Apply IMPROVED craftsmanship (draw with focus, confidence, intention, and care) because you have been exposed to the causal relationship between time/focus and the way that your art looks; you know you get out what you put in.
Consider how everything we have been doing since the start of the year has been preparing you for this. The PRACTICE assignments for SB #4 are designed to assist with this continued growth. If your practice is not deliberate, you risk missing the opportunity to improve and refine your skills.

That all being said, I honestly don't know yet what this will look like. Stay tuned and just keep doing your best work because that's what it's really about.
MONDAY: Snow Day

TUESDAY: Snow Day

WEDNESDAY/THURSDAY: 
  • Warm up: 10 min.
    • Use this time to work on a PRACTICE drawing for SB #4 (KEEP THE NO-LONGER-AN-EXAM TIP ABOVE IN MIND AS YOU WORK!)
    • SB check  Artist Spotlight #8 (show your work - will discuss on Friday)
  • Class activities:
    • Review & discuss:
      • SB #4 & Goal Sheet - any questions? How will you clearly illustrate growth through your solutions to the assigned visual problems? 
      • Project rubric - clarification/advice on completion/review of concepts
      • Artist Statement - review purpose & guidelines (see homework)
      • Mat vs. mount/ATG
    • Time permitting, Introduce linear perspective:
      • How is this concept similar to/different from observational drawing? 
      • How is this concept related to that of foreshortening?
      • How is this concept related to figure drawing? 

​FRIDAY: (modified schedule/Pep Rally) 
  • Warm up: 10 min.
    • Use this time to work on a PRACTICE drawing for SB #4 - or any last minute project work
  • Class activities:
    • Put artist statements in the "Finished Work" folder, along with the projects and rubrics
    • Artist Spotlight #8 - discuss

​HOMEWORK is designed to: 1) allow for exploration, practice, preparation, and application of class content, 2) encourage independent work, time management, and efficiency of work flow (don't procrastinate!), 3) fit within the weekly homework time allotted for this class. Keep these things in mind as you work. Use of a timer is one way to stay on task and to monitor your work time. Please note that your individual needs and work process may result in spending more or less than the suggested average time. Please ask for help/use extended lunch as needed; communicate extension requests 3-days before a deadline.​
  • DUE WED./THURS. = SB Check/Artist Spotlight # 8 
  • DUE FRIDAY = Final artist statement (will be displayed with your work). FOLLOW THESE GUIDELINES:
    • Use the Artist Statement Flow Chart to help guide your work but FOCUS ON POINT #3
    • Font = 12 pt./standard (Arial or Times are good choices)
    • Spacing = 1.5 
    • Heading/right justified = Name (bold) and Title (underneath name) (italics) 
    • Leave "breathing space" between heading and body of paragraph
    • Statement/full justification = 1 - 2 paragraphs (one page, max.)
    • SCROLL DOWN FOR MORE DETAILS (must be on a computer)
  • DUE Jan. 18/19 = SB #4 & Goal Sheet (review & do on your own; come to class with questions if you have them)
  • DUE EVERY MONDAY/TUESDAY = Check the website at the start of each week; update your agenda accordingly and complete any required preparatory work
  • DUE PERIODICALLY = Check Powerschool; it is your responsibility to follow up with make up/late work, questions, or discrepancies in a timely manner

HAPPENINGS:​​ ​​​​​
  • Jan. 15 = Martin Luther King Jr. Day
  • Jan. 16 = NAHS meets 11:45 am - 12:15 pm (this is a change)
  • ​Jan. 17 = Art Club/NAHS picture @ noon in the gym; wear your t-shirt!
  • Jan. 19 = Odd day and Honor Council assembly (modified schedule)
  • Jan 23 = Art Club​ @ 11:45 am - 12:15 pm
